From its discovery in 1493 and until 1899, when it became a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico was one of Spain`s most important colonies in the Caribbean. The 3rd. largest island in the Caribbean region (after Cuba og Hispanola) Puerto Rico measures 100 miles (160 kms) by 35 miles (56 kms). A geographical area of approximately 9000 sq.km.
After 400 years as a Spanish colony and more than 100 years as part of the USA, Puerto Rico today is a unique historical, cultural and political entity. Politically, "almost" an american state. Culturally, an independent country with it`s own spanish colonial history , unique caribbean culture and spanish as the national language.
Puerto Rico´s geographical location, only 40 Km west of the former danish
"Virgin Islands" (St. Thomas, St.Croix og St.Jan), should make it a natural choice-destination for scandinavian holiday travellers.
